What is a take foul?

A take foul in basketball refers to a defensive tactic used by a player to intentionally foul an opponent who is in a scoring position, to prevent them from making a shot. This tactic is often used strategically in late-game situations when the defense is trying to prevent the opposing team from scoring easy points.

A take foul is typically committed by grabbing, holding, or pushing the offensive player, who is attempting to score, before they can successfully make a shot. The foul stops the clock and sends the offensive player to the free-throw line, where they have the opportunity to score points.

While take fouls can be effective in preventing the opposing team from scoring, they can also backfire if the offensive player is able to make the shot despite the foul, resulting in a potential 3-point play. Additionally, if a player commits multiple take fouls in a game, they may be at risk of fouling out and being disqualified from the game.
